What Cypress Actually Is

Because cypress smells dry and woody, people reasonably assume it comes from the wood. It does not.

The oil is distilled from the fresh green growth: the scale-like needles, the fine twigs and the small unripe cones. The trunk contributes nothing. That is worth knowing before you buy, because a supplier who cannot tell you which part of the plant they distilled is a supplier to walk away from.

The cut growth comes to us in bulk from organic growers around the Mediterranean, and the stilling happens on our own equipment. The tree has lined roads and gardens there since classical times, and it is pruned as a matter of routine, which is exactly where our material comes from.

Straight From Green Cuttings

Our own still handles it. Nothing arrives here as finished oil, which on a conifer this often confused with juniper and cedar matters more than usual.

The cut growth is packed and steam is drawn through until it is spent. The oil separates clear, smelling fresh and pine-like with a dry smoky-green edge, more refined than the resinous conifers it sits beside.

How long a charge takes is decided by the cuttings, not by a schedule, which is why you will find no hour figure here.

Green Growth, Cut and Charged

Cupressus sempervirens is the narrow, columnar evergreen that reads as a Mediterranean landscape all by itself.

We take the fresh growth, cones included. Those small green cones carry a resinous depth the needles alone do not, and leaving them out gives a thinner, sharper oil.

Because these trees are routinely pruned for shape and height, cut growth is a genuine by-product rather than something harvested by felling. Nothing is taken down to make this oil.

Analysed Before Bottling

An independent third-party laboratory examines every batch, with nothing riding on the result for them.

Alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene

The monoterpenes that carry cypress's dry, resinous freshness and place the species.

Cedrol

Present in small amounts in genuine cypress. A raised figure suggests cedarwood has been blended in.

Identity and dilution

Confirms Cupressus sempervirens at full strength rather than a juniper or pine standing in for it.

Reasonable Cautions

We make no medical claims for cypress. It is a clean, dry conifer aromatic and that is the whole of our pitch.

Never apply it undiluted; a base oil first, then a spot check on one small area. Avoid it in pregnancy as a precaution.

Conifer oils turn faster than woods or resins. Keep it somewhere cool and unlit, and read the still date as real information rather than decoration. A batch that does not read as sempervirens stays unbottled, and we simply have none to sell until the next one.
